Some cool food science news I found:
Cinnamon has long been known for its antimicrobial properties (used as a corporal preservative in mummification rituals), but now science has finally decided to delve deeper into the knowledge that ancient Egyptians discovered more than 5000 years ago: cinnamon used as an anti-molding agent in food packaging. Whilst perusing the interwebs this evening, I stumbled across a headline entitled, “September 5 is International Bacon Day.” Naturally, I was intrigued.
What does one do on International Bacon Day, besides the obvious? Does one hang crisp-fried bacon strips from the mantel? Dress up in costume and go door-to-door, begging for smoky-cured pieces of fat? [...]

There are already so many reasons I want an iPhone, and now I just found one more: there is a new app, released by a sausage manufacturer in Germany, which allows you to “grill” a bratwurst in real time. You can even stoke the flames by blowing in the microphone. Completely useless, but hilarious:
Can You [...]

According to a Reuters news story released today, Historian Catherine Brown claims that haggis, the legendary and gag-inducing Scottish delicacy, is actually not Scottish but English.
Egads!
Haggis purists shouldn’t worry too much about the Scots’ patriotic claim on haggis getting snatched away; as former world champion haggis maker Robert Patrick insisted: “Nobody’s going to believe it.”

Dateline Dusseldorf. A British con-man has been arrested for fooling dozens of Germans into buying potatoes when they believed they were buying iPods, as well as other electronic equipment.
Posing as down-on-thier-luck tourists trying to unload second-hand goods at bargain prices, the man and his accomplice sold the electronics in their carrying cases, only to surreptitiously switch the bags for ones filled with [...]

We may never know the identity of the Snake Head Bandit….
CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. (AP) — The case of the severed snake head in a dish of a broccoli at an upstate New York restaurant may go unsolved.
A diner said he found the snake head on May 3 while eating at a T.G.I. Friday’s in Clifton [...]

My mom called me last night to tell me something kinda weird.
The people who are renting the house my grandparents used to live in (they both passed away last summer) are convinced that the house is haunted by them. So, they have hired a “ghostbuster” (her word, not mine) to see if it’s true. No one [...]
Disgusting Food Item of the Week

It’s baaaaack! Everyone’s favorite Wendalicious feature!
This week’s delightful delicacy comes to you from Mexico, the same country that has brought us such culinary materpieces (I’m not being sarcastic here) as chicken mole, arroz con pollo, and enchiladas suiza. I’m a big fan of Mexican cuisine, but I don’t think I’ll be venturing south of the border to try this:
Escamoles are [...]
